Uhh, buy a new hard drive, although you could turn off SMART reporting,
its generally not a good idea to ignore it, SMART normally triggers on
*mechanical* failures, such as seek times/heat/speed out of whack.

I would hazard a guess that your HD is on its last legs.

It is sort of like your oil warning light on your car. If it came on and
bothered you, one could always take the light bulb out. But I think you
would be better off to heed the warning and then follow it up by fixing the
problem.

By transferring a lot of critical and unreplacable data to your HD. You
shouldn't make backups, as that could be harmful. As soon as you have
filled up your hard disk with enough critical data - adresses, financial
data, thousands of your unique holiday pictures, hundreds of thousands
of unbackupped lines of code from your newest program, all your
documents from work etc. - if you've done that the message will
disappear automatically - together with the content of your HD.

You could also backup your HD like lightning and try to determine if the
failure can be averted, the disk can be repaired, or should be replaced
asap. But that's a solution for wimps. After all, what other purpose
have warning signals than to ignore them?

Hi,

I have already bought a new drive, but my plan was to continue to use the
"last legs" drive as a temporary storage area - I'm not worried if it does
eventually fail as I have the data on a tape backup.

I just want to get rid of the message that halts the boot / POST....

In the BIOS "Main" screen, there is an entry called
"SMART Monitoring". Try setting it to [Disabled].
(From the CUSL2-C manual - my best _guess_ as to what
your mobo might be :-)
