This function is just driving me nuts, so is there any way to disable
the smartselect/highlight stuff like when you click on some text hold
down the left mousebutton and drag the mouse to mark a potion of the
text. Instead of just highlighting it character by character it auto
marks who words and stuff instead, really annoying.

It might help you find an answer if you were to identify the specific
application(s) in which this occurs, and then consult a newsgroup
dedicated to that specific application.

Happens in all applications Bruce, even here in Internet explorer,
which is why I was thinking it might be some general setting
somewhere.

For instance I place the mouse between the o and u in the newsgroup
word in this sentense"then consult a newsgroup", hold down the left
button and move the mouse left, it highlights each letter nicely until
i get to the A, then it automarks all of newsgroups.

I'm unable to duplicate that behavior, so I can't see what may or may
not be doing it. You might try looking into your Accessibility features
to see is something there might be doing it, but, other than that, I
have no idea.

Zarkas,

This has been a source of frustration for other people for many years. Here
is a link regarding this specific issue going back to 2000.

There is no system wide setting to control this. It is a matter of using
the mouse by selecting and dragging to highlight the desired text.

Seems like you'll have to get used to it.

If you drag back to the beginning of the selection it will go character by
character from then.

Thanks for your replies guys. Had kinda hoped it was a simple setting in the
windows registry. Thought it was something you could learn to live with but
especially the last two years its been annoying me more and more instead.

Yes the start of the highlight will stick and it will work fine for the
current word, but as soon as you get to the next word it autoselect the
entire word instead of just the first character.

I think what . meant was to highlight from the right-hand end towards the
left hand end. From your reply, I get the feeling you didn't do that...

From my experience, I also agree with Bruce Chambers that it's application
dependent - you just happen not to have the other kind of apps.

I have no idea who you meant to reply to, but it shows up under my post
and references my post, but fails to quote my post or to be of any
interest to me, since I have, in the last nearly six months, forgotten
what this thread was about.

Actually, I'm wrong - my post is quoted below. It's at the bottom, but
the posts here seem to be quoted in reverse order from the normal, i.e.
the oldest posts have the fewest ">" marks. It is true that the only
post listed in the references header is mine.

t w's headers are confusing, but if I read them correctly, the host is
eggheadcafe.com, which seems to be b0rken, judging by the mess below.
