Disable serial input devices

I am using a PC with several different serial data inputs. (all on COM
ports not on USB)
Unfortunately from time to time XP detects these as a new mouse and as the
data is not a mouse you effectively lose control as the pointer goes
nuts...!
Is there a way to disable all serial pointing devices (or disable detection
of) in XP?
I am quite au fait with editing registries and sys files.
