I searched all around but still haven't found a solution!! I want to
disable the power key on my keyboard. I accidentally pressed it too
many times and it's driving me nuts!!! It doesn't even confirm if I
want to shut down.

I looked in BIOS setup (Asus CUSL2-C Mobo) and there's absolutely
nothing mentioning the power off key. There's a POWER ON with keyboard
configuration, but that's not it.

I have a plain generic keyboard and did not come with any drivers, nor
are there any specific drivers available and I don't want to pluck the
key out or stick a toothpick beneath it, etc.. I can't believe there
isn't a software configuration for this!!

I'd greatly appreciate a solution to this.

Control Panel
Power Options
Advanced.
"When I press the power button My PC" - Set it to Ask me what I want to do,
or anything but shut down.

Jessica,

My kitten quickly revealed the effect of Power key depressing so I had to
have to pluck it out. Power button of the ATX case and this key are just the
same and hardly you may want to disable this Power Option completely.

P.S. Nevertheless, the kitten uses the Sleep key now and the F1, but never
the Esc.

Has no effect with regards to the keyboard power button
on my system. Only seems to affect the power button on
the computer case.

Fat lot of good that link is. He would have to
pay $50 US to see a solution for XP with absolutely

You only need to pay to ask questions.
no guarantee that it would be applicable to W2K.

The scan code registry keys and values and control panel power applets are
the same across both OS's.

Any drivers with the keyboard? Our elonex keyboards in work come with a
driver disk, to control the hot keys.

No special drivers.
This is just a standard 101 key "Windows" keyboard.

Must be the keyboard. Replacing the it with
a Fujitsu keyboard - still no drivers -
makes the power button provoke the dialog
described above.

Unfortunately, there is still no way to
simply disable the damned button. Even
just a very light brush of the button while
my fingers are on their way to the small
six-key panel above the power button provokes
this dialog. Better than a shutdown, but
still very annoying.

At home I simply opened up the keyboard and
removed the rubber suction-cup-like thingy
from under that key, but unfortunately I
can't do that everywhere I go.
