Disable Onboard Video

I have a Dell with an Intel 82810E Onboard graphics
controller. I would like to install a PCI video card. So
far I have changed the default video to PCI in the BIOS
and upon starting the PCI card video freezes and the
onboard works as normal. In device manager the DEVICE
USAGE area is grayed out for both cards. Drivers are
loaded properly for both cards. Any ides????
 
You can spend BIG amount of time , before you can found PCI card , working
in multi-monitir mode.......
Try S3 (manufacter - ExpertColor) , these cards more compatible.
90% - your PCI Card is not properly assigns IRQ (is "Assign IRQ for VGA"
enabled?) and onboard video doesn't turns off , normally , onboard turns off
and can't be used after installing any video card for all Intel chipsets

It might help to get rid of the drivers for the onboard controller, ie
Uninstall it. OTOH, merely putting the PCI card should disable the onboard
controller. (But since this is a Dell system, who knows, Dells are notorious
for being a PITA to change or upgrade.) NB that the W2K version on your
system may also baulk simply because it sees new hardware - again, Dell OEM
versions of W2K aren't the same as plain vanilla W2Ks, and may not like being
told there's new hardware. OTOH, if you do get rid of the drivers for the
onboard video, W2K may decide that it's Found New Hardware, and start the
wizard that helps you install the drivers for it.

If Uninstalling the onboard controller works, good. If not, you will IMO need
advice from Dell's tech support in this case (unless you're lucky enough to
find someone here who's done something similar and found a solution.)

To get the PCI card to work you will have to disable the on board VGA in the bios. Consult your Dell manual or support on how to do this.
