Trying to find a way to stop MSAS from starting at system startup. I tried
"settings / real-time protections / uncheck everything but the program still
starts. gcasStServ.exe remains a running process.
I used MSAS to stop certain programs from launching at startup. If I remove MSAS
will those items remain disabled?
Maybe it's as simple as unchecking "gcasServ" from the msconfig startup tab. Is
that the best way?

Dear Dan

Ms Antispyware shouldnt be used as a firewall so you should
use it as a means to block application that are not wanted
if tou need a fire wall you can get a firewall
(i.e.Zonealarms) or just install SP2.
For your problem with MSAS starting up at startup to
disable that you have to go to
Options > Real-time protection > First box > Enable the
Microsoft antiSpyware Security Agents on startup

you have to just unclick that box then it doesnt startup
when you turn your pc on.

You'd think it would work that way but doesn't. I tried on 2 computers. When
unticking the "enable .." it still show up in tray as being active and
gcasStServ.exe is still running using 11.5MB of ram. (now that I've unticked the
other box it only uses 7.5MB ram but is still running.) I'm not too worried
about the ram usage but the computer in question will be in a location without
any Internet access or network whatsoever.
I used msconfig to disable it and that works fine.
Basically I loaded MSAS for it's ability to show and tell what apps were
starting up and it's ability to "Block these startup program". It's a little
more informative than MSCONFIG for this purpose. I didn't want to un-install
MSAS because it keeps track of which startup items I've blocked.

Removing the startup item you mention is one method.

The Microsoft-supported method is mentioned in the "workaround" paragraph in
this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892375 End users may be prompted to allow or
block administrative actions that originate from a central management tool
after they install Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) on a computer that is managed
by Systems Management Server 2003

Thanks Bill. I will keep track of that link. I think for now stopping MSAS from
MSCONFIG is working. Would be easy to re-enable.

FWIW, that's what I did on my mother-in-law's machine. She's well into her
80's and I don't want things in place on her system that will raise alerts
at any point--they'll confuse and scare her, and result in anguished phone
calls to me.
