About a month ago I started getting unwanted "pop-up
messages" from the Internet. The most common theme is to
get me to go to a web site for free information on how to
stop these messages. I do not trust the message senders
and refuse to do this.

How can I disable these messages so that they cannot get
to my work station.

Thanks,

Dave

If you're getting those messages it means your computer is pretty much open to the internet. If you were simply to stop the service, while it would prevent you from getting more of the messages, it would not prevent other *really* bad things from happening to your computer. I would recommend that you go download the free firewall from ZoneAlarm (www.zonealarm.com). Don't let them trick you into buying it (although I did buy it and it is worth the money) because if you look carefully the free one is easily available. Hope it helps.

I agree. You can go to a place like http://scan.sygatetech.com/ to check your basic
vulnerability. Zone Alarm is good for novice users and Kerio or Sygate for more
advanced users that know a little bit about tcp/ip. --- Steve

Stopping the service won't help said:
