Can anybody suggest a method to disable Internet explorer on windows 98. I
currently have 28 PC (classroom) on a LAN and would like to disable Internet
access. Unplugging the network is not an option because of the print server
and file distribution. Purchasing additional software is also not an option
(limited funding). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well, without more details it would hard to give you an answer. Do you
have a router of some kind that provides you with the network (LAN)
and is the internet connection (WAN) provided by a cable or DSL modem
attached to the router? Do you have control of the LAN or is it
administered by some guru?

Anyway, I don't know how to disable Internet Explorer, but most
routers have the capability to block internet access (WAN) for
selected "members" of the LAN. If you have control of the router, you
could block all 28 computers from accessing the WAN while giving them
access to the LAN. If you don't have control of the router, your guru
should be able to do it for you.

My solution to this has always been cut and dry - disable DNS on each
PC. If it's a lab environment, then it's not like your going to lose
connectivity to thousands of PCs. You may have to create an LMHOSTS
file if your not running NetBEUI. But for 20 or so PCs in an
educational enviroment, if anyone tries to use a fully qualified doman
name to access a site, they'll end up with an error message. However,
using IP addresses will still get them to their favorite sites, but
who keeps a list of those?

Good luck!
