Hi,

Is there a policy that can stop users from renaming the desktop icons? We
have a number of users who like to fiddle with such things and mess about
with their desktop. We've alread disabled the ability to change the wall
paper and a few other things.

Cheers

Why not assign them mandatory profiles, so that none of their changes stick.

We are looking into mandatory and roaming profiles, however we need to make
sure they are done correctly and test them. I was wondering if there was a
quick way around stopping users from changing icons. A lot of users do it
accidently, by double clicking, but doing it slowly so windows thinks you
want to rename it, the users then panic thinking they have done something
wrong, and hit the keyboard, so lots have icons named 'sgfhfg' etc.

If you want to prevent accidental renaming, assign deny write permission to each
existing desktop shortcut.

Actually I just decided to take a look at mandatory profiles and they're
easier to set up than I thought. Although I have a small problem!
I just had a go at one, we have 5 machines, all log on as the same user. So
I logged on as user 'labeller' setup the desktop, then logged off and on
again as administrator, went to user profiles under system/control panel and
copied the profile for labeller to \\server1\profiles\labeller.man I set the
permissions so the user had read+execute permissions. I then renamed the
NTUSER.dat to NTUSER.man then in the AD I set the profile directory path for
the user as \\server1\profiles\labeller.man however when i then log back
into the machine as 'labeller' it doesn't seem to pick up the profile. I've
gone in to the profile and done some changes to the desktop, like delete IE
and OE from the programs menu + task bar, but they are still there when the
user logs in.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
