Try this...

Make a copy of any picture (preferably in
landscape orientation)...open it in MS Paint
or your favorite image editor and fill it with
a color...Yellow might be a good choice.

Rename the picture...
folder.jpg
Right click the picture and choose...Copy...

Now...right click any folder that displays
thumbs on the outside and choose...Paste.

The folder will now display your folder.jpg.

Continue right click / paste on your folders
until all are done.

Here's a more detailed article on it:

Thanks for the reply
i was already aware of that trick but since i want "live folders"
gone/disabled system wide for all folders it wouldn't be practical

never mind tho ill switching back to XP and i can only hope and pray MS
gives us the option in windows 7

Argh! I was really hoping to do this myself. I've got my own custom set of
icons, like Sem, for folders and filetypes, and I dislike the appearance of
the icons of folders with thumbnails inside them clashing with my custom
icons. But - turning thumbnails off is no good; because I still want to be
able to see thumbnails of image files when I'm in the folders! I hope this is
addressed at some point in the form of a registry fix or an option.
