I don't like how in IE, Word, Outlook, etc. when I select text that it
auto-selects the entire word. Much of the time I only want part of
the word. I have a text editor called NoteTab that doesn't have this
auto word-select feature and I like it a million times better. Is
there any way to turn this off universally in windows?

I also don't like how font attributes are contained in the selection
so when I paste into a document, it has the same font as the original.
How can I turn this off as well?

Thanks,

Shawn

Go into Word>tools>options>edit> de-select the "When selecting automatically
select entire word"

Default in Windows: To select part of a word, single click. Double clicking
selects all of the word. If you are getting different behavior, what do you
have setup in Folder Options> General> "Click items as follows" If you are
using single click options, you'll need to change how you are selecting or
change to double click settings.

Word has additional settings found under Tools> Options. Uncheck the box to
select a word with a single click. If Word is setup as email editor for
Outlook, the setting carries over to Outlook as well.

Sharon,
Thanks for the reply, but I think you misunderstood what I want to
shut off.
I actually discovered Word 2003's default selection works the way I
want it to.
It's the rest of Windows that doesn't work the way I want, more
specifically, IE and Outlook.
In Folder Options>Genera> I already have it set to double-click
settings.

It's when I select text in a browser. For example, take this
sentence:
"WinXP Selections are Annoying"

Let's say I only wanted to select "elections are Annoy", it
automatically selects "Selections are Annoying". It automatically
selects the "S" in Selections and "ing" in Annoying even though I
didn't want it to. It won't let me select the partial words unless I
go back and forth several dozen times.

Thanks for any help.

Ah, after trying it in IE I see what you mean. Good You have text
selection under control in other programs. Bad news, I don't know of any
way to change selections in IE. Sorry. I checked for a setting similar to
Word's in my assigned HTML editor (Front Page 2003) but do not see one.

I did stumble upon a workaround though:

Insert the cursor at the point you want text selection to begin. Move down
to the next line (do not move to the right) so that text is selected on
more than one line. Tried this repeatedly and as far as I can see the
selection does not backtrack to include all of the first word. Then move
the mouse back to the end of the desired test selection. Tried several Copy
methods: Right click> Copy, Ctrl+C and Edit> Copy and they all appear to
hold the selection without adding to it.

A bit clumsy but it may get you through until you can find another way to
manage this.
