disable certain starup features

I am new to win 2000. I am trying to disable certain startup features
not uninstall them. I tried msconfig but no luck. How do I disable
(not uninstall) different startup features? Also I know this is not
dealing with a file question but I would like to disable my sound on
my USB modem. I have set it to "off" in the modem section of device
drivers but it still makes noise. So, how do I turn it off? Do I need
to type in some code into the registry?

Copy msconfig from Windows XP to the "windows" directory or AutoRuns from
sysinternals http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

You can disable the hardware in Device Manager.

Thanks for the link to autoruns. It was exactly what I was looking
for. I did set the volume of my USB modem to "off" in the device
manager but it still makes noise. Any further suggestions?

Maybe check the hardware manufacturer's web site.

The autoruns did not remove the hpdeskjet icon from the sys tray.
Should I try to delete it?
 
If you want it gone, then yes.

Thanks, it worked fine, I was just concerned about messing up the
registry. In regard to modem noise, I went on the zoom webpage and was
unable to find any info about disabling the speaker. Is it possible to
disable the modem speaker in the registry?

No idea really. You'd need to ask that of the driver developer. You might
also look for a jumper on the board.

I have a SupraMax from Diamond that's USB for a spare that I use(d) on
client systems. It was, to say the least, horrific but it got the job done
and no - nothing would normally make the speaker shut off... Well, I
shouldn't say nothing. Ticking the option to disable the modem speaker in
the modem's settings (through the control panel) worked but ONLY worked on
XP. Yup... Didn't work on 2k, didn't work on 98, didn't try it on 95 nor NT.
Odd that... It wasn't even recognized and had no drivers for Linux so never
tested it there.

Anyhow...

Dave's already set you up pretty well but for future reference there's a
handy app and some information here:

You might find that MLIN's Startup Control Panel (tiny tiny tiny) is tiny
and good - it allows you to disable stuff without actually deleting it.
Pretty handy for diagnostic uses and no confirmation message on boot to
contend with. Did I mention it is tiny?
