We need to disable cdrom use, specifically playing music
cd's, but if that's not possible then disabling the entire
cdrom will work.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

do you have a domain or just peer to peer, i think if you had a domain your
admin's would know this but here is what you can do , go to start, run type
mmc click OK, go to FILE then to add remove snappins, then go to ADD,then
scroll down to group policy, in there you can set things to enable or
disable, go to computer configuration then to windows settings, then to
local policies, then security options then to devices:restrict CD-rom to
local users...

that should do it

Jay

Thanks for your post, but I'm interested in completely
restricting the use of playing music cd's, and if I have
to, any cd at all. If I restrict it to the local user it
will have no effect on this.

so you have a domain then?

Yes we do, do you know a way to set a GPO to restrict
access to playing music cd's, or simply restrict access to
the cdrom completely?

yea, under user configuration and then windows explorer you can restrict
drives a,,c,d,e etc ,also you can disable it under device manager too, also
you can restrict media player, also disable autorun(Computer
Configuration\Administrative Templates\System )

hope that helps

A way to disable the whole cd-rom-drive is to deactivate
the driver. A tool from microsoft to do this is
devcon.exe. With this tool you can enable/disable single
hw-drivers or group of drivers. You don´t have to restart
after enabling/disabling a driver, so you can control the
driver with the user logged on in context of an
administrator.
