Is there a way to disable writing to a CD / DVD but still have the ability to
read the CD?

I was hoping to be able to configure this via a GPO or by altering the
registry.

If there's a software way to do it, I don't know one, but one approach is
simply to replace the CD-writer with an inexpensive read-only drive.

Why do you want to do this, by the way?

I can disable the software via a software restriction policy in a GPO.

I want to disable the writing funtion so users cant take information out of
the office that they shouldnt. And most new computer are coming with a CD-RW.

Do these machine have USB ports? Even if you disable CD-wrinting, they can
easily plug in a thumb drive.

Do the machines have internet connections? They can E-mail or FTP
information.

Diskette Drives? Access to a printer? It might be very difficult to really
stop this.

Don't forget about USB thumb drives which are truly shirt pocket portable
and easily used for recording information.
