No sound card on my computer at work (Win 2000 installed), but the build in
speaker beeps annoyingly for certain
events and warnings, e.g. when I try to close a program that has unsaved
data.
Is there any general way to switch off the internal speaker without opening
the box and cutting / disconnecting the wires?
Louis
Don't. Those beeps are supposed to annoy you -- because you may be doing
something that you shouldn't. If you keep getting beeps, you should probably
review your methods. And why would you want to risk losing data, just because
you don't like the beep?
However, you _can_ change the warning sounds to ones which may soothe your
troubled ears somewhat. Settings --> Control Panel --> Sounds. Use one of
the given "sound schemes," or customize; some events are _not_ included in
the schemes, so you may have to add some sounds. You can use any sound file
on your drive. You do need a soundcard for this, and it may be worth the
investment - it doesn't have to one of the current 80 watt mega-bass
surround-sound boomers, just a plain vanilla PCI card - you should be able to
find a used Soundblaster and speakers for a few bucks.
I recommend Windows 2000 Instant Reference (Jutta VanSteen, ISBN
0-7821-2572-7). Now that MS has stated it will phase out support for W2K,
this book is usually on sale. It answers most of the questions of most
"ordinary" users like you and me, and has a pretty good index, which makes
finding the information quite easy.
