Hi,

It appears that a friend needs to reinstall Win 98SE, but it says it
cannot install because the BIOS AV is preventing it.

Neither he (directly), nor I (via telephone) can figure out how to
disable the BIOS AV

Award software inc.
ROM PCI/ISA BIOS P55SS-ML v 4.51pg

Please assist.

it's one of the options in the cmos setup... when he boots he needs to
press the magic button that enters the cmos setup (which key it is
differs from one manufacturer to another but it should say on the
screen during the power on self test what key to press)...

the option should say something about anti-virus or bootsector
protection...

The bios is preventing the install program from writing to the first
track of the hard drive (boot sector). This should only be a warning,
message, that should allow you to select to allow the writes, but it's
probably better to disable it, until the install is finished.

To do this, you need to modify the settings stored in the CMOS. The
easiest way, is with the setup program, stored in the compouters bios.

You can find a manual for this specific bios setup program at
http://www.phoenix.com/resources/bios-award-m6117.pdf

===== Don't change any values you are not familiar with. =====

The instructions for turning off the virus warning with this bios are...

Press the del key, as you boot the computer, to start the setup program
Use the arrow keys to select "Bios Features", and press enter
Select "Virus Warning"
Press page up (or down), to toggle the setting from Enabled, to Disabled.
Press the escape key, to return to the main menu
Press F10, to save the changes, and exit the setup program

When the PC boots up press DEL to enter the BIOS.

Go to Advanced Settings

Find the option called Virus Protect/MBR Write Protect or similar. Set
it to No/Disabled.

Install Win98

Repeat above but this time enable it.
