Disable Autocomplete in cell

When I follow the suggested procedure to disable autocomplete in cells in
Excel 2007 by unchecking the box in options, advanced and then enter "OK"
......autocomplete remains active. Very frustrating. Has anyone observed
this.

I'm trying to enter an acronym: "HSA" for Health Savings Account. Keep
getting "HAS" no matter what I do.

I am using Vista Ultimate 64 bit OS.

Thanks in advance.

That is a feature of Autocorrect rather than Autocomplete. In XL2003
and earlier (sorry, I don't have XL2007, so I'm not sure how you
access this) you click on Tools | Autocorrect and this brings up a
panel showing Replace and With. Scrolling down this list you see hsa
is to be replaced by has, and hsi to be replaced by his etc as a quick
way of correcting common typing mistakes. You can just highight the
entry for hsa and click on Delete to remove it from the list.

Note, though, that this list is shared with other Office applications,
so in Word, for example, a mis-typed "has" will not be corrected if
you remove it from the list. Presumably Peter (aka Billy Liddel) does
not have this in his list.

Hope this helps.

Well spotted Pete!

Thanks for the heads up Pete.

I see what you are talking about but unfortunately it doesn't offer a
universal solution. Yes, I can remove hsa and hsi for example from the
autocorrect list, but that would affect Word. I was looking for a solution
to simple "turn off" autocorrect for a spreadsheet or better for a range of
cells or even just one cell without making a unversal change in the way the
entire suite functions. I would like to type what I want in a cell without
the software forcing an alternative.

I think this sort of problem is a reason why a lot of folks prefer the older
versions of Excel, Word or even why very old software like Lotus 123.
Simplicity sometimes has its advantages.

It seems to me that you used to be able to override input in a cell by

On that Tools | Autocorrect panel, there are a number of options that
allow you to turn things off - just unclick them all if you don't want
Autocorrect to happen.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll consider that. I suppose spell check would still function and
I'm a pretty good typer! (grin)
