Mister Scary

I'd like to do the above. I have done this in the past on Windows XP using
services.msc. But when I look there now I don't see any applicable service
listed and I have read every one on the list.

The knowledgebase articles are hopelessly out of date - they were written
for Windows 98/Me.

You mean to disable CD autorun? This works to do that (i.e., after you
insert any CD, nothing will happen). (found this through Googling some
time ago)

Go to the following Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom.
Double-click on Autorun, and you'll see a default value of 1. Change it to 0
(zero). Then restart the computer.

There should be some system utility that lets you do this from a GUI without
going to the registry directly.

If you have WinXP Pro, a Group Policy tweak works. In WinXP Home, a registry
hack is required. For both versions, TweakUI can do it.
