My laptop auto clicks mouse button if pointer is left on an action box for
over 2-3 seconds. IT IS DRIVING MY WIFE CRAZY!!! Therefore, she is driving me
crazy to disable it. I have tried every menu and every option I can think of.
Please help me figure this one out.

Following the advice on the Dell website, I removed my Synaptics Touchpad
appl prior to upgrading to XP Pro, and now have the same problem.

Once upon a time there was a virtuous setting called "hover to click" - this
is it! It is wonderful for someone with seriously disabled fingers - they
don't have to click.

But it DOES seem that there must be a "hover to click" timer somewhere. I
cannot find it in Assessibility Options.

anybody got any other ideas where to look?

I have synaptics pad also, there is no menu option in settings-mouse for what
I am experiencing.
Thank you for your post.

It's not there.

Here's a notion: I bought my Inspiron 8000 from the Dell Outlet. My
suspicion is that the prior owner had third-party accesssibility programs
installed, which included "hover-to-click," and that this is a remnant that
Dell did not eradicate.

I would assume that Dell would have totally reformatted the hard drive -
but, who knows for sure?

Did you purchase yours factory-new?

Yes, bought new HP. It didn't always do it, this is something new that it has
started doing since my future son-in-law (idiot) decided to install a
wireless router connection, which he was never able to successfuly comnnect.
Unfortunately I was out of town at the time. Since then we have completely
reinstalled windows XP to no avail., Phew...

WEll, of COURSE he waited until you were out of town! Reversing roles
(chortle!), wouldn't you have done the same?

I just hope that no one works in MS Word - "hover to select" selects all the
text from where you (the INSERTING cursor) are, all the way DOWN to or all
the way back UP to wherever the mouse cursor happens to be at the moment.
That selection of text is deleted and replaced by the next character you
type. Cute.

Well, since yours is obviously not of the same derivation as mine, I think
we constitute some sort of special demographic: an HTS-contingent of some
sort. We are not Survivors, since we are still afflicted. We are not in
Recovery. Although you may be a co-dependent. Are we Victims of HTS? Or
Sufferers of HTS? What do you think?

It was at least a year ago that I posted it in some MS newsgroups - somebody
recalled some old program that had had that feature. I'll try it again in
the new Office group - it seems to attract some bright folks.

Win 2000, Win ME, Win 98, NT4 with IE4, and Win 95 with IE4 all have hover to select. However it isn't what you are talking about here.

So, How do we disable this option? I tried an email to Microsoft & Acer (my
computer brand). I got no reply.

I even went out and bought a mouse thinking that might solve the problem
(now have 4 extra, none stop the auto click).

Well, Stephanie...what are we HTSers to do? Just get used to it? Keep
accepting all those items Sweetie bought on the internet because the mouse
clicked on the "yes" box? I think not! Someone out there must have the answer
short of trashing our laptops. I hope so...soon.
