is there any command I can place in a word document to prevent a user
generating a pdf file? thanks, cathal..........

Uninstall adobe acrobat - or if that is too simplistic, you could run a
macro that will unload the add-in, but that would not prevent the user from
printing to the Acrobat printer driver and achieving much the same thing. I
think we need a bit more information on why you want to do this, but the
bottom line is that you need to setup Windows permissions for what
applications the user has access to.

Disabling pdf maker won't make any difference, as it simply facilitates
adding some extra formatting to documents processed via the Acrobat printer
drivers. What you want is a user fix, not a technical fix.

Please respond in the same thread on this newsgroup - not by email!
Include details of your application and Windows versions, plus any
service pack updates. Answers may also be found by reading recent

If something doesn't make sense, it could be worse e.g.

See Mike's reply - but bear in mind that you don't have to convert the
document to PDF - and if you do, it effectively becomes a graphics image.
This, I fear, is not going to help you very much.
