If one disables a service in Administration Tools, is it normal for the
service to
still show up in task manger?

Thanks,
James

No. But you need to be more specific... like what is the service that
you disabled?

I disabled a service I'm trying to get information on but have been
unsuccessful
getting any info on it at all:
AGCoreService
I noticed even though it is disabled now, it still shows up in Task
Manager's Services tab as Stopped.

James

It shows in Task Manager's Services tab. I disabled it from Administrative
Tools|Services
and it remained disabled

James

James,
apart from disabling the service, you must also stop it. Disabling means
that the service will not start automatically on the next reboot. However
some services like antivirus apps have anti tamper protection that will not
allow the service to be disabled in this way. Although disabled, the service
will still show in services.msc. That's normal. The only way to remove it
from services.msc console is to uninstall the application that installed
this service.

Googling around tells me that agicoreservice.exe belongs to C:\Program
Files\AGI. Do you have this entry? If yes, please see if you can get any
clues as to what AGI is from looking in its Program Folder.

In Taskmanager where? It should not be amongst running processes under
"processes" tab, but it iwll appear amongst services under services tab,
obviously.

There's a number of services which resist disabling, e.g. in WindowsVista -
Task Scheduler. The only way for me to kill it was to delet eALL tasks
under each folder, and delete folders, etc - took me 30 minutes, I could do
dissabliung with one click in WindowsXp by stopping Task Scheduler from its
control applet. Not anymore, now it's a pain

DUH!!!!

All stopped services show up as "stopped" in Task Manager.

Got it.

James

I'm disabling the service not mealy stopping it.
If I were stopping the service I would have said so in my original post.

You're an idiot. You also have to stop it.

Doesn't this Registry entry disable the Task Scheduler in Vista?

---------------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule]
"Start"=dword:00000001

I disabled it and it shows as being stopped.

James, in XP disabling the RPC (I think it's that one, long time ago)
service will trash the machine (It can be recovered but only with a lot
of messing around). I mention this because Disabling may result in your
losing the ability to re-enable it. Setting a service to start manually
on the other hand will allow the service to be restarted by another part
of the OS it is becomes needed.

I do not know if anything like this applies to Vista, but my advice for
the future would be to either try it on an less important machine or
else google for "Disabling the XXX service" in case there are any hidden
disasters waiting for you.

I would think that all services installed "Should" show up whether
running or not together with their status, seems to me this would be a
good thing.

The service in question is AGCoreServices. I did google it
and found some things about it enough to tell me it doesn't appear to
be Vista service, as far as I can tell.
I don't particularly like disabling services unless I'm sure I don't need
them.
But, in Vista I went to Administrative Tools|Services and right clicked the
service
and select properties where I was able to disable it.
But thanks, I believe the answer to my question is that all services should
show up in
task manager whether disabled or not.

Thanks,
James

Click start, and type in the search box:

msconfig

then hit enter. Click on the services tab in the System Configuration
Utility window that appears and scroll down until you see the
AGCoreServices or whatever service you are looking for. It will list
the manufacturer there, so it will give you an idea where the service
comes from.

Hi Jason,

agCoreService is not a Microsoft-supplied program, and not a standard
part of a Windows installation. I suspect that it belongs to software
produced by AG Interactive, a subsidiary of the America Greetings
Corporation:

http://www.aginteractive.com

You probably have (perhaps unwittingly) some AG software installed, such
as the Kiwee Toolbar. If so, you might need to ask AG Interactive what
their software is doing, dialling home? And/or, if its an issue,
uninstall the software from your machine; that should remove the
agCoreService service.

Hope it helps,

Andrew
