Eric

I can't install directx 9.0 for some reason. It
says "software is not signed by microsft" or something
like that. I tried to go into settings and accept
unsigned software, but even with that it still wouldn't
install. I am at my wits end here, and if anyone could
help I'd be appreciative.

Do you (1) have SP1 for Windows XP installed? And (2) have you tweaked your
system by shutting down any Services? A couple web sites and a magazine
article suggest turning off Service to speed up XP, but without mentioning
the side effects. You need Cryptographic Services enabled, and SP1
installed to be able to use DirectX 9.0.

Hi Eric
This is often caused by a corrupt catalogue file or because the
cryptographic service is not running. To check this go to start and select
run, now enter services.msc
Scroll down the service list to Cryptographic services, double click it and
ensure the startup type is set to automatic and the service is started.
Also if that is already running or has no effect, rename the catroot2 folder
in c:\windows\system32 and try reinstalling DirectX 9 again. (You must be
logged on as an administrator user to rename the catroot2 folder). If
renaming catroot2 allows you to install DirectX be sure to install Q817287:
Critical Update (Catalog Database Corruption in Microsoft Windows) from the
Microsoft Windows Update site to ensure the problem doesn't arise in future.

Hope that helps you
