DirectX Microphone Problem!

I seem to be having an issue with DirectX Voice. I have a
game, Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, and I have a mic. I
have had SCPT for the past 6 months, and the mic for the
past 5 I would say. Both have worked perfectly fine, until
now. Today I went into SCPT to play, and my mic did not
work. I exited, and ran a mic-config utility included with
the game. I got this message: "An error occured during
DirectPlay Voice setup. The error code is 0x80004005." I
can only click ok. Here are the steps I have taken. I have
downloaded and installed DirectX 9.0c, no change. I have
downloaded the latest drivers for my Sound Blaster Audigy
2 ZS, no change. I have run DXDiag, no problems found
EXCEPT when I run the DirectPlay Voice Wizard under the
Network tab. I get the following messages: "An error
occured during DirectPlay Voice setup. The error code is
0x80004005." Then another window pops up saying, "The
DirectPlay Voice Wizard failed with error code
0x80004005." The last step I recall taking is going to
Control Panel>Sounds and audio devices>Voice>Test Hardware
where I get the following message: Windows Error: "Windows
cannot execute DpvSetup.exe, use Add/Remove Programs
control panel to install." Okay so I go to Add/Remove, and
there is not anything there I can see to figure out what
to install or repair or anything. This isn't life or
death, it's just a silly microphone for a silly game
(albeit a good one), I'm not getting BSOD's or anything,
but it would be nice to figure this out! Thanks so much in
advance for any help you can provide!

Hi Mike,

Since this is a new issue, use system restore to recover from it.

Hi,

I've searched high and low from microsoft to mcafee's
suggestions...the problem lies in the registry (in my case). I was
getting this same error. Also, my event sounds like windows startup,
email, etc sounds were not working either. As it turns out, I had a
similar PC at work and export these two keys to register the MIDI and
default Windows files in order for it to work again. It worked like a
charm. I also had an issue with the windows recorder not
working...again...this import fixed it.

NOTE: My work PC was a win2k Pro and my home PC is a WinXP Home
Edition. Import this key using the win2k should not cause problems but
you should always backup your registry. Also, some rules to know:

1. If the source file (SF) has keys that exist in the destination
registry (DR), the destination registry will be overwritten with the
new value.
2. If the SF does not have a key that is listed in the DR, the DR
entries will be retained (i.e. not deleted).
3. If the SF has keys that do NOT exist in the DR, it will be added to
the DR.

Here are the 2 keys:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]

and

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\drivers.desc]

Okay, I hate to sound retarded, but I know where to locate those registry
thingys, but what do I do, I dont understand what I do with them...delete
them? Sorry to be so ignorant, but the registry scares me so I want to be
sure on what I do...you were really getting the same error (0x80004005) when
you tried to run the DirectPlay Voice Setup? You're the first I've heard of
that knows of it... :) Thank you for taking your time...Ill try this when I
understand what to do!
Michael

Does dxdiag report any directplay dlls as being unregistered? If so you can
re-register the dlls (dpwsockx.dll, dpmodemx.dll, dpnet.dll) by typing

regsvr32 <dll name>

Mike,

Once you find the keys on a good working PC, export just those two
keys (Regedit...highlight the key...select Registry...Export Registry
File. MAKE SURE THAT YOU HIGHLIGHT THE KEY FIRST. Then select just the
current key when the Export window pops up. Do the same for the second
key. Anyone with question, please email me at (e-mail address removed).
I don't frequent here often - i've posted this article up on several
sites and forget my login info sometimes to post a reply :)

Good luck.

Oh yeah...I was getting the same error (0x80004...blah blah blah). I
forgot to add that once you export the keys, you'll use those two
registry export as your source file to import into you defective pc. I
have to stress that you should backup these two keys on your defective
PC first!!!! Then run this import. If you have any new problems after
importing (shouldn't but you never know), delete the two keys
completely from the defective PC and import the two backed up keys. If
you don't delete the two keys, you're just overwriting the backed up
entries into the existing key so this means that any strange faulty
entries that are not overwritten by the backed up files are still
there after the import. Remember the rules below - #2 in this case.
