Hi,
I am runnin Win XP Pro sp1 with directx 9.0b. Lately, I have to rerun the
setup for directx almost daily as at some point, all apps which utilize it
fail with the error "An error has occured while initializing Direct 3D".
Once I rerun the setup, the same apps function correctly for several hours
but usually with 24 hours, I must rerun again. Reverting to a restore point
has no effect and I am at a lose for figuring out what the problem could be.
System consists of an Asus A7N8X-Deluxe, NVidia Geforce FX5200, 2 Maxtor
80Gb drives set as Raid-0 on sata channel, CD-R/W ide 1 primary master,
DVD-Rom ide 2 primary master, 1Gb ram.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated, I'm at wits end after trying to
figure this out myself for the past 2 weeks.

This will tell you how to and will install back to dx8
http://www.paulsxp.com/files/directx-dx9uninstaller.zip
Then uninstall the fx5200 driver next reinstall fx5200 driver and reinstall
dx9x.
Did you install dx9b from M$ update and then the version that is on the
fx5200 cd as well maybe?

Nope, I installed only the microsoft version through the DirectX web setup.
Ive even gone as far as a reinstall of the OS and then a direct update to
DX9 after the video driver install. Still happens

When I first installed my fx5200 and drivers (after uninstalling the old
ones first) I ran dxdiag which reported dx9 as being corrupt. Fortunately
after a long due clean intall everything was ok. :-!

I can only suggest removing / refitting the card again if you havn't already
done so. Is it well vented etc? Might be a dodgy card.

My gforce fx makes a laser gun sound (capacitor charging ) when my comp
boots up. Takes longer to display the logo etc on boot up compaired to my
old card. Maybe a dodgy batch of cards. Someone playin football with the
box's. lol.

Good luck. :-)

Well, new bit of info. After going through with the uninstall posted, I
reinstalled both NForce platform drivers and Nvidia video drivers with a
reboot after each then reinstalled DirectX 9.0b from Windows Update. Just
ran dxdiag after the required reboot and it found no problems but in the
display tab, both Directdraw Acceleration and AGP Texture Acceleration are
listed as 'Not Available'. This strikes me as really odd as I know the FX
series support both of these features and they had been working previously.
After all, what decent video card today doesn't? Normally, a reinstall of
DX9 fixes the problem but, for some reason today, all attempts have been
fruitless and I've now done it at least 5 times with the same result.

What are NForce platform drivers? How can you install 2 drivers. I have
updated my video drivers in the past without first un-installing the old
drivers which lead to me not being able to run the display properties (run
dll error ).

What I do is I uninstall the old nVidia drivers first!!! nVidia drivers page
recommends this. I then download from M$ update or from Nvidia or if I have
them on disc / desktop already I install them from there. If I am
downloading new drivers from M$ update I make sure I have no nvidia display
drivers installed ie uninstall them, reboot and with shit resolution (with
only the windows display drivers running), I then download from win update
which usually just goes ahead and installs the latest nVidia Gforce FX
drivers itself. This is why I uninstall them first.

I forgot this bit (Sniped my own post by accident from "sent items" as
yesterdays didn't get through). lol.
