DirectX dingo's got my baby! (Well, my laptop...)

Hi --

I installed the latest DirectX on my new laptop and now I
can't log off.

When I try to log off, the system ignores me. But if I go
to Task Manager and kill directx.exe, then logoffs go as
usual. I've reinstalled the latest DirectX and ran
dxdiag, no dice. And sadly there is no uninstall for
DirectX.

Anyone ever seen this before? Suggestions? (Other than
writing a batch file with taskkill and shutdown to log
off...<g>)
