i have a a couple games on my dads laptop that worked
perfectly on with directX verion 8.1 and then a program
that was loaded onto the laptop upgraded it to version 9.0
and now none of my games work becuase the video card
doesnt support that version of directx......what can i do
to downgrade the version of directx, i have tried but it
says it has completed installing it then i restart it and
it is still version 9, what can i do about this?

Nick,
Try upgrading the video drivers for the video card in the laptop. If you
are unsure what video card it is you can run a program called Dxdiag and it
can tell you what you are running under the display tab. Better yet you can
post in a reply to this thread the DXDIAG.txt that Dxidag creates that will
let us know what hardware is on the laptop and we can suggest to you what
you will need to upgrade and where to get it to get a better gaming
experience on the laptop.
dxdiag:
Click on Start -> Run and type 'dxdiag' in the run box, then click 'Ok'.
When the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window appears click the 'Save All
Information' button, which will create a text file on your system where you
specify, as in My Documents or Desktop. Open that text file, copy the
contents and paste it to a reply.

have you tried "directx eradicator"?
On my pc it worked with every version of directx
f.
