Perhaps this is the wrong place to ask this...I'll find out. :)

I am attempting to use a program I downloaded from online, from
Karen's Power Tools. It looks like JUST the program I want. Why
Windows does not offer a feature where someone can easily list all the
files in a directory, well, shocks me. It certainly seems like an
easy enough job to write up. But anyway, I have Karen's program and
it gives me the option of printing the list or saving it to disk. The
program displays the directory and folders but not the contents on
screen. I just want to view them on the screen. I've searched her
site at www.karenware.com and can't find a support area, or anywhere I
can look up that information. While it does give her email address,
it also states she receives quite a bit of mail, so I didn't bother
writing her.

Does anybody know how to display the list on screen?

Edw,

You can add a right-click menu option 'Print Directory' for folders.

321379 - How to add the Print Directory feature for folders in Windows XP:

Note:
Remove the "/p" parameter if you want to view the folder list in notepad. "/p" invokes print.

start /w notepad /p "%temp%\Listing"

Wow, that looks very interesting indeed, adding a right-click link to
print directories. Do you know if it will list the contents on
screen?

Also, I need to learn the ins and outs of registry (how to copy before
I jump into it, where to store that copy and how to reinstall the
original IF my changes don't work...maybe SYS Restore would handle
that too?) I'm not a power user and I hear people talk about doing
this and that, but not the actual mechanics. When I search for such
information, I must not have the right keywords because I don't find
what I need. Thanks.

System Restore will change the registry back to what it was at the date/time you select. One thing you can do to verify that making changes do work as (for example) at the KB article, is to do what the changes represent. Like modifying the shell in this particular KB article has that effect if you don't change the "Default" value in that registry listing. If you make a print directory drop down, and you open a folder without making the changes, it will open the search feature in XP. Making the change will correct that, and you can go back and forth to verify it.

Remove the "/p" parameter if you want to view the folder list in notepad. "/p" invokes print

Just in case you are one of the many that uses Microsoft Office
but does not know about the Microsoft Outlook Integrated File
Management Advanced Find component (finder.exe)...

You can "Print a view of a file list" using finder.exe.

For some more information about finder.exe, search Microsoft Outlook
Help for the following phrases and read the topic(s) returned:

- About finding items and files
- Search for items and files using Advanced Find
- Set up or remove individual components

If your interested in learning a bit more about using finder.exe to do
Boolean Text Searches and/or to Copy Search Results or a File
List into a program such as Word or Excel do a Google Advanced
Groups Search as follows:

Google Advanced Groups Search
http://www.google.com/advanced_group_search

Find messages with the exact phrase:
Outlook Integrated File Management Advanced Find

Return only messages where the author is:
Carrie Garth

Or click this link:
http://www.google.com/groups?as_epq...ement Advanced Find%&as_uauthors=Carrie Garth

And if you have any questions about the Microsoft Outlook
Integrated File Management Advanced Find component I
suggest that you post in the following newsgroup:

microsoft.public.outlook.general

If you read the newsgroups using a Web Browser see:

Microsoft Office Online
Office Discussion Groups Home
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx

If you read newsgroups using a NNTP newsreader, such
as Outlook Express, and use the msnews.microsoft.com
news server here is a link:

Actually, what I'm really trying to do is not print everything or save
to file, but just to view the contents on my monitor.

"/p" invokes print

Can I ask a silly question? If all you want to do is view a list of files in
a folder, why not use Windows Explorer and set the view to "list"?

Because I would like to first view the contents and then, if I choose,
print the list, and this seemed like the easiest way to accomplish
both those goals.
