Is there a freeware program (or another way) to password protect a
directory? I want this to use on a USB flashdrive in case someone else
finds it. I do not want to password protect each file individually.

Thanks in advance... Bob

AxCrypt File Encryption Software - Free Personal Privacy and Security
for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2K/XP with AES-128 File Encryption, Compression
and transparent Decrypt and Open in the original application.

http://axcrypt.sourceforge.net/

Thanks. 2 Questions please though before I download. The website talks of
it integrating with Windows Explorer. The encrypted files will be moved on
the thumb drive to various computers. Each computer doesn't need software
on them, do they? Just the thumb drive? Also (and very important) the
program refers to itself as file encryption. It will do whole folders as
well (rather than each file individually)?

Thanks for you understanding... Bob

A quick thought. I don't really need full encryption security. A simple
password for folder access would be fine for my usage.

Yes, each computer will need the software installed; however, axcrypt is
small enough to fit on a floppy and install easily on each. And yes, it
will encrypt all the contents of a folder with one whack. I have been
using axcrypt for a year with complete satisfaction and recommend it
without reservation.

That won't work then. I'll be traveling and they will not be my computers I
am using.

Just out of curiosity, what type of flashdrive do you have? As I looked
for some programs that might suit you, I noticed that some flashdrives
come with the ability to password protect it.

Why not zip up the folder with all the files, and then password
protect the zip file? Then copy to your USB flashdrive...

Cheers...

Keep in mind that password protecting a directory is probably going to
be OS-dependent.

Somebody who finds your pendrive and runs Linux will probably have no
problem bypassing your directory.
