I am trying to directly connect two w2k with a cross-over cable.
In this case how shall configure TCP/IP properties like IP addresses, the
sunbet masks, gateway and DNS?
Should DHCP be running on both computers or on one or on none?

Hello aa,

Just connect them, check that the workgroup name is the same. If you check
the ip (ipconfig /all) you see that both start with 169.254.x.x These you
can use for your mappings. DHCP server is not needed, but the DHCP workstation
service must run.
The range 169.254.x.x is called APIPA (automated private ip addressing).

Thanks, myweb
I did not quite get about DHCP.
If I set the IP addresses to be acquired automatically then DHCP on the next
tab "IP Parameters" is turned on automatically and I seem have no control to
change it. How shal I see if this is DHCP server is running or DHCP
workstation service?

Hello aa,

Ok. For the service

start>>run>>services.msc sroll down to DHCP Client, should be started and
automatic.

To check your ipaddresses

start>>run>>cmd enter. This opens the command prompt, theire you can type
ipconfig /all
It will display your ip address

How do I check the workgroup name?
I remember the workgroup name was mentioned when installing w2k and I just
accepted whatever was offered by default. Now I can't find where it is
accessable from

Thanks. They both are on WORKGROUP
ipconfig rerurns IP addresses as you suggested.
DHCP Client is started and automatic on both computers.

Computer1 pings Computer2 OK
Computer2 when pinging Computer1 returns
Request waiting insterval exceeded (translated from Russian)

Windows Explorer on Computer1 in NetworkEnvironment -- AllNetworks--MS
Windows network shows Workgroup with itself in it only

Windows Explorer on Computer2 in NetworkEnvironment -- AllNetworks--MS
Windows network shows Workgroup but would not expand it saying No access to
Workgroup. The list of servers for this work group is not accessable

What shal I do next?

Hello aa,

Take the folder from what you like to copy data. Open the Properties go to
Sharing tab, check share this folder. The name appears automatically. Say
ok, thats all. Then it will be visible in my networkplaces>> entire network>>
computername>> sharename

Best regards

Did not help. I guess I still need to understand why it would not ping. The
hardware should be OK for I have XP on the same PC and fron XP it pings fine

Why would you do that instead of just setting static IP's ?
