I am lead to belive that you can connect a printer directly
to your PC's ethernet connection if you use a cross over
cable. I have a Lexmark Optra R+ and A PC with XP home. The
network is enabled as I get the icon in the bottom right of
my sreen " local area connection 10.0 Mbs" The printer has
the network card enabled but I can not print. The
instruction to print times out with an error message,
unable to print!
Can any one help me set this up as I would love to get
printing via the ethernet port.
Thanks,
Mike.

Can you print a test page from the printer (not from your computer). That
will show it's IP address and other settings. Try to ping that IP address
from your computer. Open a command prompt and type "ping 192.168.1.3
(replace with the IP of your printer). If you get "request timed out," you
may need to change it's IP address so that it is in your LAN subnet. After
that you need to add a printer port that points to that IP address as
follows:

Start|Printers and Faxes|Add Printer|Next|Local Printer attached to this
computer|Uncheck "Automatically detect"|Next|Create a new port|Standard
TCP/IP port|Next|Next|enter the IP address of your
printer|Next|Finish|Select the manufacturer and model|Next|Next|Next|Finish

Phil,
Can you help with this "If you get "request timed out," you
may need to change it's IP address so that it is in your
LAN subnet."
I do get a time out but do not know what to change the IP
addess to? Can you explain please.
Thanks,Mike.

Phil,
This is what I have from my computer.

Ethernet adapter Local area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

The IP Adress of my printer is 192.168.1.50
IP Netmask 255.255.255.1
IP Gateway 192.168.1.1

When you say change the printer IP address to something
close to my computer what is 'close?
When i look at them both they appear to be close already?
Thanks for your continued help, I look foward to the next step.

Mike.

Phil,
I changed the IP Address on the printer to 192.168.1.49 and
followed your directions to add the printer port.
Same problem as before! After entering the IP Address I
get another screen Saying "Additional Port Information
Required"

Could it be the crossover cable? I purchased a new CAT6
Crossover UTP Cable, is this correct? I thought so. I do
get the notice from windows that the Local Area connection
speed is 10.0 Mbs when I turn on the printer.

I hope this helps in your diagnosis.
Thanks again,
Mike.
