Make sure you are using a c`ross over cable. Disable or uninstall all
firewalls including XP's ICF during testing. See:

Sounds like a configuration issue.

Check the ip addresses of the two machines. You might want t
statically assign ips on them.

Such as----

Machine1:
192.168.10.1
255.255.255.0

Machine2:
192.168.10.2
255.255.255.0
