Direct connection between XP and Mac OS X

Is it possible to connect a Mac running OS X to a standard Windows XP
box and have a mini-network? I've always been able to connect two Macs
with a crossover cable, turn on file sharing, and have an instant
network. Does XP offer this capability? I'm hoping that if it does,
and since Macs will autoconfigure to any IP network, regardless of the
OS, that I could connect the two together for large file transfers,
backups, etc. Any ideas on how to do this?

FWIW, you didn't cross post, you multi posted.
Not that I care that much, I'll leave that for use-news nazis, but
you'll now have to go to each group that you posted to in order to see
all the possible replies.

I provided some links in one of the other groups.
