Direct connecting

Im trying to direct connect my laptop to my desk top,
i've tried both direct connect, and networking, and
either i did something wrong, or I just don't know what I
am doing, any Ideas

The most obvious problem is that you have the wrong
cable. To direct connect you need a special "cross over"
cable.
