I bought my laptop in the USA about 2 years ago,it is a
Sony PCG-FXA36, it had Microsoft XP Home Edition
Preloaded. After downloading the latest updates from
Microsoft the CD Rom will not work. When i restart the
system i get an error message saying that windows has
prevented the drivers for Direct CD from loading as this
will make windows unstable. I have followed the link that
comes up, which takes you to the Roxio website, i have
also phoned Roxio and after downloading all their
suggestions ( 4.5 Hours of it ) Error message still comes
up. The Drive is a CD/CDR/DVD combi drive, and the DVD
part still works perfecly. I got the 6 CD set of Recovery
Discs with the system but because the CD Rom will not
work I cant use them. Is there anyone out there that can
help.. PLEASE

I have experienced this exact problem, but I too do not
know what to do. I'm tried to uninstall the software, but
the there is nothing to remove in the "Add/Remove
Software" option, nor is there anything in Program Files.

Roxio has been no help.

If anyone has any insight, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

I too am experiencing similar problems with a CDRW drive
that XP Home sets up as a CDROM (read only drive) with a
Microsoft driver, which seems to override the Adaptec
Roxio driver that does recognize it correctly as a cdrw
drive within the Easy CD Create module under tools Drive
Info. I think Microsoft has been pushed to provide fully
functional drivers for a whole universe of older drives
and has defaulted to partial testing of these drives, and
it's frustrating. Driver Guide.com is one site that might
have the correct driver for your drive where I have found
drivers before, but the older drives are getting harder to
find OS updates for. Good Luck.
