I just purchased a new laptop that uses Windows XP Pro.
I need to transfer data off of my old Windows 98 machine
but cannot get the direct cable connection to work.

Any ideas, advice, enlightenment, etc. out there?

Thanks,

Rick

Does the laptop have an ethernet connection? If so, buy an ethernet card,
for the desktop, and a crossover cable. Then hook them together in a LAN.

An alternative if both machines have firewire support is to do a direct
connection by this means - note that you need to set it up as if it was a
LAN connection rather than a conventional direct connection. This produces
a very fast data transfer between the machines (as an aside I was unable to
get internet connection sharing to work over this type of connection - not
sure why it would not work)
