John

I have a direct cable connection between my PC and
Laptop. The PC is also connected via a LAN to another PC.
The problem is that I can access the Laptop's files from
the PC, but not the other way around. Also, I cannot
access the Laptop via its name, I have to use its IP
address. When I try to ping the name, it says the ping
request could not find the host. Also, when I ping the PC
from the Laptop (using the PC's IP address) the request
is timed out. The file and print sharing is enabled.

Thank you

to sort out the name/ IP problem you need an entry in your hosts file

How do you do that.
search for a file called hosts ( eg mine is in c:\i386) not that familiar
with XP to know if its the same for every version.

its got an entry already
127.0.0.1 localhost

add yours beneath it
192.168.x.x othercomputer

http://othercomputer will bring up the machine.
