Direct Cable Connection w/ Win2000 & XP

Is it possible to make a direct cable connection using a
standard parallel cable between one computer running
Windows 2000 and the other running Windows XP?

I have a printer cable (male to female) and a connector
(male to male) - will that have the correct pin
configuration or do I need to buy a special cable?

Is there a website with detailed instructions for a
beginner to direct connection networking?
