Hi All,

I am having a problem that I do not seem to be able to solve nor find anyone
who can give me an answer.

Many times while trying, I am unable to open IE6. I finally opened it and
immediately downloaded Netscape7, believing that I just could not deal with
having to reboot each time I wish to use my browser. I did the same using
Opera. Same thing with both Netscape and Opera, they won't open up
completely, they all show that they are trying to pull a page but eventually
I get the dreaded message that it cannot find it.

I reboot, they all open once (sometimes). If I close them, then thats it
for opening again, I have to reboot the machine. My OS is Windows XP Home.

I have disabled my ZoneAlarm, disabled my Norton's, all to no avail.

Can anyone help? I have tried to go to the IE newsgroup and receive no
response. What is wrong?

Thank you in advance to anyone that might be able to shed some light on this
problem.

Tom

Have you scanned your system for viruses? Also, you should check for any
spyware/malware on your system, download, install and run Ad Aware,
www.lavasoftusa.com.

Open Control Panel, open Internet Options, on the General tab, click Delete
Cookies, Delete Files (accept the option to delete all offline content and
click Clear History, then try the Internet again through IE.

I must say, given you are having this problem with all browsers, you either
have some setting or software on your system that is the source of this
issue or you have some sort of problem with your connection or Internet
setup in which case it might be best for you to contact your service
provider and have them walk you through setup. If that doesn't resolve it,
maybe they can help you troubleshoot this issue.

Thank you for the advice. I have scanned for virus', ran ad-ware, ran
spybot. One result from all of them is one common
file.........new.net.........which all three is unable to delete,
quarantine, or otherwise get rid of. I am not sure if that is my problem or
not.

Further, I have also done all of the other things you mentioned within the
control panel.

I am in hopes that all of the above actions has taken care of my problem.

Thank you very much,

Tom

You're welcome, Tom.

See Joan Archer's post in this thread, click N at the site to which she's
linked in her post, you'll find information on new.net.

Thanks Michael, new.net is usually the bugbear of people in the ME NG's so
hoped it would help in XP.
Joan

Thank you. It seems that I have gotten rid of it. The having to reboot is
still having to take place even though new.net is gone, so I must have yet
another problem. What is going on is totally beyond me.

Appreciate your advice.

If your system is clear of viruses, open Control Panel, open System, go to
the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery, remove the
check from "Automatically Restart" under System Failure. This will cause
the system to blue screen instead of restarting on errors and the
information on the blue screen may give a clue as to the source of the
issue.

Open Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer, look for
errors corresponding to the crash, double click the error, the information
contained within may give a clue as to the
source of the problem.

Assuming you have an XP CD and not a recovery CD, place the XP CD in the
drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility,"
the report it generates may point to problem hardware or software on your
system. If you do not have an XP CD, you can download this application
known as the Upgrade Advisor from the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
Note: If you have access to a broadband connection it might be best to
download using that as this is a rather large download.

Check for the latest drivers for your hardware, especially your graphics
card and soundcard and all peripherals connected to your system. Do not use
Windows Update for this, go to the device manufacturer's web sites and if
you install updated drivers, ignore the message about drivers being unsigned
by Microsoft.

Glad to have been able to help, I see Michael has provided you with an
answer regarding the reboots.
