Digital Photos Can't Open

Suddenly I am getting an error that state. "error while decoding image file." I have had these files for a while and can not figure out what to do. I can see the picture in the thumbnail but I can not open it. Any help? thank you

Please look at the extension of the file and tell us what it is. It should
be something like:
filename.jpg
If you have anything other than .jpg we need to know in order to help.

Thank you for your quick response. I am really in a panic. I am wondering if somehow the picture files were corrupted even though I still see them as thumbnails. All of the pictures are filename.jpg

If so, they should open. I was worried that you would have something like
..vbs after .jpg and this would be due to a virus. Apparently not so.
Then, tell us what you do to open the file. You double click on the file
name or thumbnail to open it? Or you are trying to open the file with a
particular photo editing software?
Also, you see the thumbnails. Click on the view icon (last icon on the right
on your top bar) and change the view from Thumbnails to Filmstrip. Do you
see a larger photo above the thumbnails in filmstrip view below this larger
picture? Answering these questions would help us trying to figure out what
is happening.

I see the thumbnail but in do not see a picture on the preview in filmstrip. When I try to open the picture by double clicking it I get the message "suitable graphics importer could not be found". Thanks AGAIN
