hi, I took some digital photos and posted them as attachments.when i try to
open the attachment icon in the arrived email, it says this file does not
have a program associated with it for performing this action. create an
association in the folder options control panel.

could anyone please explain to a novice how to open these photos?

Hi,

What's the filetype involved?
What's the OS and Service Pack Level of your system?
Are you able to open the digital photo after saving to hard disk first?

thanks for your response.

the os is windows xp and i seem to remember downloading service pack 2 but
am not completely sure now that i did it and dont quite know how to check
whether i did it or not.

i did try saving the attatchment to the desktop if that qualifies as saving
to hard disk in your question, but it would still not open from there.

the attachment icon when arrived is labeled typically as
ATT00024.dat(1.31MB) when the photos were sent as attacments they were
labeled typically as IMG0227.JPG(628KB)

many thanks for any further assistance Ramesh.

Previously posted information from Tom Koch.

That sounds like your friend was sending the message in a format that is not
supported by Outlook Express. It is probably Outlook's Rich Text Format
(*.rtf). That is not an Internet mail format so Outlook Express does not
understand it. You can see the text of such a message, but not the
formatting, such as the background. If your friend can send in HTML or text
instead, you will be able to see it properly in OE.

You may try decoding the existing .dat file (always make a backup copy
first)

the default setting in OE was rich text. when it was changed to plain text
the photos are transmitted correctly and open without any trouble.

well done Ramesh and many thanks.
