Is there a way to format a digital photo file so that it's smaller than 100K?
Right now the picture I want to make smaller is 768k, and I need to be 100k.

Try IrfanView...you have an option to adjust
the compression when saving a JPEG. Just
go to...File / Save As...adjust the Save Quality
slider.

Download IrfanView
http://www.tucows.com/preview/194967.html
(get the plug-ins too)

Be sure to save under a new name so
you won't replace your original with the
compressed copy.

Easy-peasy

Look for the Microsoft Power Toy called Image Resizer

It permits JPEGs to be resized and resampled at different levels.

It's a neat solution that i would never willingly be without

Workflow (after installing Resize Image):
1 - right click on the image

2 - choose Resize Pictures

3 - click the option in the dialogue box that appears

you don't even need to worry about renaming the image as (large)
(medium) or (small) is appended to the filename

Neat eh?

When you go to...File / Save As...you
have a "Save In" field at the top of the
"Save Picture As" screen. Just open
the drop window and choose where
you want the file to be saved.

I have Irfan View, but i cant seem to figure out how to resize digital
pictures. and i have scanned pictures that i took with a film camera, but
there is a large portion of blank white space (because the picture itself
only took up a little space). how do i get rid of the white area, and how do
i resize my digital photos?

==================================
In IrfanView...open an image and go to...
Image / Resize. Enter the new size.

Then go to...File / Save As...give the
file a new name...choose a folder to
save in and click...Save.

Also...the following free PowerToy can
be quite useful:

OK, go to the following link and download and
install: ImageResizer.exe

http://tinyurl.com/36n

Then you can open any folder that contains
images and you will have an option to resize.
Just right click the selected image files and
choose Resize Pictures from the menu. You
can select one image or a whole group.

The program will place the resized copies in
the folder with your originals.
(Tip: *Never* overwrite your originals)

For this you have to *Crop*...IOW...
cut out the portion of the image you wish
to keep. The following free program has
a good crop tool...

FastStone Image Viewer
http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

To prevent the white space in the future...
when you scan an image in WinXP...
click the "Preview" button to see what's
on the scanning table...and then adjust
the box around the portion you wish to
scan. Also for better resolution....click the
Custom Settings button and enter 300dpi.

Here's a good site on scanning:

Before "resizing" you want to crop your images so that there
is no blank background included.

Read the "Help" for the program to find out how to crop an
image.

"The wastebasket is our most important design

Help > Index > Index > scroll to Resize

Then scroll to Crop

Make sure that a reasonably good resize algorithm has been selected (the
algorithm box appears in Resize dialogue box)

Try Slideshow as well, or even Batch renames

It is a very useful program (free for non-commercial use)
