This is a digital offset printer questions but I thought maybe someone
here may have experience with them.

I am looking around for a commercial printer to do short run digital
offset printing for me (ie. Indigo 5000 and the like). I think offset
would be too expensive.

What was your quote for 11 x 17 full color one side in quantities of
....

100, 300, 500, 1000, and 10000 ?

At what point does offset become cheaper than digital offset?

Any better NG's to ask this question?

Thanks.

Readers might be interested to know what a "digital offset" press
might be. As normally used, "offset" means a printer that transfers
an image from source A (a master) to destination Z (paper) via an
intermediate process B (usually an inked roller.) But this is a
wholly analogue process, because the page is transferred as a
single image; once source A exists, digitization would not help
or speed the process. So what is a "digital offset" press ?

There's a prepress newsgroup that might know. Personally, the largest
runs I've printed myself have been in the order of a few hundred, then I
haven't bothered with a printer's until about the 10000 mark.

My print friends usually advise me that it's not worth offset setup
costs until you pass 5000 copies - unless it's a high end job that
needs the quality no matter what.
