I am having problems downloading pictures from a Nikon
Coolpix 2100 camera connected through a USB cable. When
the PC tries to see the camera I get the following Windows
error message from the wizard:

"Installation failed because a function driver was not
specified for this device installation"

I have tried:
Removing the Nikon software using the Control Panel
Cleaning the Registry entries for the software
Deleting the USB's in Device Manager.
Reloading everything, but to no avail.

The camera works fine on another PC

I am running Windows 2000 Pro OS system

thanks

I have having similar problems now, too.

I just recently installed Service Pack 4, and installed drivers for a
Verizon VX4400 phone. Did you install either of these recently?

My camaera is a Fuji FixPix 400Zoom, I've been using it successfully
for the past 2 years. I now get this same message on both of my
machines, both of which have had service Pack 4 recently installed and
the usb drivers for the verizion VX4400 )www.futuredial.com)

I just purchased my Nikon Coolpix 2100 and have this problem.

I haven't found a sure-fire fix for it yet, but sometimes if i plug it
in during the computer booting up, then let it sit at the login screen
whilst it loads all the drivers (basically get a coffee and come back)
then login it SOMETIMES (1 out of 10 tries) works. I read about this
in another thread and the guy just bought a compactflash adapter and
it worked after that.

I'de prefer to find out why its doing this and fix it :(

One thing I have noticed in my troubleshooting is if I remove the VIA
USB ROOT HUB the computer will detect the camera correctly (and the
USB ROOT HUB).

Anyone know what this is used for? I don't have a USB hub, just two
usb ports on the back of the PC.

Those 2 ports are connected to the USB chipset probably on the
motherboard. That is the "hub".

You might want to look into new VIA drivers at their site.

#¤%¤! It didn't work like I thought. For some reason it worked
several times in a row, but now, its the same thing again. It loads
as USB Device on USB Device (as opposed to Mass Storage Device on
ECD2100 Digital Camera) I am going to try the whole shebang again and
see if it helps. Maybe I will call Nikon and see what they can
suggest. Like I said before, people with all kinds of USB cameras are
having this problem when they connect with a VIA USB chipset.
Hopefully there is something that can be done.

You may need more than that "filter" they offer.
Newer drivers for the specific chipset used might help. This is beyond
me now for your scenario. Checking/asking at the manufacturer seems a
good bet.
