Digital Camera Owners Caution

MS AntiSpy detects the Windows file "cbrowser.dll" as a
trojan.

This file is not a trojan. It ships in Windows and many
digital camera software packages.

It is designed to allow the users to browse camera storage
devices as one would browse a system drive.

Delete this file and you "WILL" lose digital camera access
and browsing functionality.

Recovery "WILL" require re-installation of your digital
camera applications and/or drivers.

Hi MikeS:

While I certainly don't doubt what you've posted...I've
got two different active digs on my XPSP2 system at home
and have never had any issues with either of them with
any of the MSAS defs.

What dig camera/software are you seeing this with?

Regards,

RobbieA

I also haven't found this file, although I own a Canon digital camera which
is old enough to have required its own software, in pre-XP times.

I don't discount your report--Microsoft Antispyware has had false positives
of various sorts--but you need to give us (and Microsoft) some clear
information: What vendor does this file come from? Can you give us a
downloadable source for the camera software that includes this file?

The information that I originally posted is correct.
The driver file is from the manufactuer's support site.

Hard to imagine that Pest Patrol, Spybot, LavaSoft and
Etrust AV, all missed this Trojan infecting only one
machine on our network.

Since this detection alerted on the only WIN2k box on our
LAN, we're confident that the detection IS a false
positive. Simply put, "Delete the file and lose camera
browsing capabilities (like exploring your drive)."

OS: WIN2K
DEVICE: POLAROID DIGITAL CAMERA
MODEL: PDC 640CF (USB)
DRIVER FILE: 640CFCAMV.EXE

Don't have the file.

Regularly use both an SD and a compact flashcard as back up devices without
any problems , also down load direct from a couple of cameras

Hmm - am I correct in thinking that it isn't going to be easy for Microsoft
to replicate your findings, even with that additional information?

I guess there might be an additional bit that I could ask you for that might
be useful:

Using the tools, advanced tools, advanced file analyzer--can you hit the
file in question--cbrowser.dll--and post the output--the MD5 hash would be
what would be most useful, I think.

One set of false positives has happened when a freely available "building
block" piece of code is used in legit software and by malware. I've no idea
what the situation is with this one, but the more accurate information
Microsoft gets, ideally being able to trace the particular file you see
labelled as spyware back to a legitimate distribution, the better.

The vendor of the software can also report this to Microsoft via this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/isv/fpform.aspx

I just installed the Polaroid PDC 640 twain driver for Windows 2000 and
cbrowser.dll is not in there.

Better get your machine cleaned up and then reinstall your software for your
camera.

Okay go ahead and perfume the pig, but at the end of the
day it's still a pig.
The original assertion and undeniable truth remain..."The
detection of this app as a trojan is a false positive."

Seems that everyone has forgotten that we're talking
about "BETA" software.

"Oh how I long for the days of CPM!"

A component of the driver for an Oregon Scientific digital camera, DShot
III, model DS6888A. The web cam function of this particular camera seems to
work fine without cbrowser.dll. Works with the ComLib.dll; other files are
always active in spite of the camera status. Traces all Windows activities
and does not show on Task Manager or WinTaskPro. The Win XP driver is recent
and not Microsoft certified:
http://www2.oregonscientific.com/consumer/downloads.html. No registered
files seem to use cbrowser.dll, although it uses a number of Windows system
files. CBrowser.dll is known to conflict with PestPatrol. If this file is
removed, PestPatrol should run fine -- and so should your digital camera.

My point is that if it was freeware / shareware then adware could easily
have been added. There is no evidence that clean machines need or even have
this file.

I hold that it is suspicious and does not belong.

You can't browse the web with CPM - go crank up a Kaypro if you want though.

Thanks Mike--that should be enough-and thanks again for the full report on

I believe you are reporting a genuine false positive. I don't think this
issue has anything to do with Microsoft Antispyware being a beta--false
postiives are going to continue to be an issue beyond the beta stages.

That's confusing though--it is a report of a software conflict, not a
