I have the same problem as many others: I plug my Kodak
CX6300 digital camera in the USB port, Windows XP Home
says it is connected, but it is not listed in My
Computer. Tried running Tweak UI; it didn't work. Looked
at my registery and the entry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER was
correct. However, I have no entry at all for the entry
under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Downloaded Autofix.exe and
followed the instructions. My Computer recognized my
camera, but as a HARD DRIVE with 138 MB. Did a restore to
get rid of that problem, but I am back to square one. It
is important to fix this as I cannot update the firmware
in my camera otherwise. Hope someone can help. Thanks.

The fact that the computer recognizes your camera as a drive and gives it a
letter is fine. Double click on it to open it and you should see a folder
icon, click on it to open it. You should see your photo files listed. Select
them and copy to your hard drive.
So go back to use Autofix so your computer can see your camera.

Thanks for you prompt reply. Downloading pictures from my
camera has never been a problem using software on my
computer. The problem came up when I tried to update my
camera's firmware. To do that, I have to copy and drop
the update to the camera's removable drive in My Computer.
My Computer never would recognize my camera until I ran
the Autofix. But since Autofix causes My Computer to
recognize my camera as a hard drive, will I corrupt my
camera if I update it when it is listed as a hard drive as
opposed to a removable drive? Thanks again for your help.

I now get what you mean. Normally XP will recognize your camera as a
Removable drive, listed under Removable drive, not listed under Hard drive
and Autofix will place it under Removable drive. This is the first time I
see this and I really don't know the answer. Is your camera a Minolta A1?
Some have had problems updating the firmware. Probably a call to the camera
maker would be the most appropriate way to try to get this problem resolved.
I am sorry of not being able to help more. I just don't know. I don't
recommend this, but if it was me, I would open it as a hard drive and
download the pictures. However I would not do anything else like deleting
pictures etc. I would do this with the camera itself. I don't see how you
can harm the camera by reading the card listed as a hard drive, but remember
that I really am not sure of this.

The camera is a Kodak CX6330 Zoom Digital Camera. On the
Kodak web site, I finally found the problem addressed
where the camera would not appear in My Computer at all.
Their answer was stated something like this: we don't know
why the camera will not appear in My Computer on some
systems using Windows XP Home; however, you don't have to
go through My Computer to download the pictures and there
is no reason to update the firmware unless there is a
problem. Needless to say, I'm peeved at that reply and I
told them that they would not have updated the firmware if
it wasn't to improve the camera; I want the latest
firmware and if they could not resolve the problem for me,
I was taking my camera and the one I bought for my
daughter, both for Christmas, back to the store before the
30 day "no question asked" period expired. Haven't heard
from them and I don't expect to. I appreciate your
attempt to help me and I wish you well in your endeavors.
In that regard, I am sure you will not have any problems
as you seem very efficient and persistent in your work.
Thanks again.

The problem you have is not with your camera or your
computer; you are a whining idiot. Your firmware doesn't
need to be updated unless the update addresses a specific
problem you're having with the camera. From your string
of pathetic entries in this thread, it's obvious that your
camera is functioning as it should, but you went looking
for something to complain about and found it. The reason
you won't be hearing back from Kodak is that they'll be
pleased to have you return your camera and become someone
else's problem, and they can get on with helping people
who actually need help.
