I have an obscure brand camera (SiPix 1.3) whihc worked
fine on my old Win 98 machine. After I got a new machine
with XP, I had trouble downloading, and now I can't get the
computer to even recognize the camera. The second time I
tried to download on the XP machine (Photosuite III), the
SiPix logo screen would appear in display area, and then
instantly disappear without giving me the usual thumbnail
view of photos on the camera. I tried to download with a
few other photo programs I had, and got the same result. I
tried removing and then reinstalling the camera drivers and
that worked for one time, with the same failure on the
second attempt. I removed then reinstalled another time
sucessfully, with the same failure on the second attempt to
download. I tried the same trick this morning without any
success, getting instead a message under the Hardware
Update Wizard of something to the effect of "USB
connection" and subject #28. On my latest attempt I got the
message under Hardware Update Wizard of "The Class
installer has denied the request to install or approve the
device". What is wrong here? Help!

Probably the software is not XP compatible. Have you checked the SiPix
website for driver and software updates.

Cameras are much the same as scanners in this regard. When you move to a
new operating system, often the manufacturer will update the drivers but the
software bundle goes badly out of date and either refuses to function or
causes enormous instability. If SiPix has updated drivers, download and
install them. As to the software, you'll need to check the app
manufacturer's websites for updates or availability of new versions and be
sure to check that they are XP compatible. The hardware manufacturer's
rarely update the software bundle because they have no control over the
software, they usually supplied modified and/or "Lite" versions so you
usually need to go directly to the app manufacturer and purchase the latest
version.

Thanks for your help. I did visit the manufacturer's site,
but there were no updated drivers (the company seems to
hvew gone on to bigger and better things than personal
cameras). Are there any generic drivers that would work, or
any other possibilities?

My recollection of cameras of the type that SiPix produces is that they are
pretty inexpensive and SiPix makes some of them so you might want to
consider replacing it.

Drivers are the responsibility of the manufacturer. You might find some
site with generic drivers but chances are you'll spend a lot of your time
trying to figure out why your system is crashing and unstable and possibly
no time doing the things your trying to do.

I have the same one and mine works find on xp I can't get my scanner to work
and on the disk it saids it's for xp to but work find in 98

Yes, but setups are different and there may be other things conflicting. If
you have a scanner rated for XP that isn't working you might want to check
with the scanner manufacturer's tech support.

Assuming you have an XP CD and not a recovery CD, place the XP CD in the
drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility,"
the report it generates may point to problem hardware or software on your
system. If you do not have an XP CD, you can download this application
known as the Upgrade Advisor from the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
Note: If you have access to a broadband connection it might be best to
download using that as this is a rather large download.

Check for the latest drivers for your hardware, especially your graphics
card and soundcard and all peripherals connected to your system. No not use
Windows Update for this, go to the device manufacturer's web sites and if
you install updated drivers, ignore the message about drivers being unsigned
by Microsoft.
