Difficulty with Xvid codec and WMP 11 (or Media Player Classic)

Hi.

I've got an .avi file that I would like to view. It does not play in
WMP 11 (on Win XP Pro) so I checked what codec was required using the
GSpot utility. It said that it was an Xvid MPEG-4 codec. So I
downloaded and installed the codec for Xvid that is posted by Koepi
(Xvid v1.1.2 for Windows). The installation went fine. But I still
receive audio with no video in WMP 11 (as well as using Media Player
Classic). Another thing to note is that if I view in Windows Explorer
my file list, it does show the first frame of the video in the file
browser. Audio seems normal.

I ran GSpot again, and it says that I have XviD MPEG-4 Codec and XviD
MPEG-4 Video Decoder installed. When I tried the "Render" in the
DirectShow Render block of GSpot, it says that rendering was
successful using the video decoder mentioned above.

Any thoughts on a) what am I doing wrong, and b) what can I do to fix
it?

I have a few different .avi that are in the same format and none of
them play so I don't think it is a case of a single file being
corrupted or anything like that.

Thanks for your input!

Dont count on gspot, i ran it on a movie i was watching and it said the codec
was missing and my xp media center could not play it, so i un-installed gspot
and watched the rest of my movie. Try "ffshow" codec pack, you might have to
go into the setting on it to make it the default codec and turn on the xvid
codec. I use it and it works perfect, and its free.

i installed the ffdshow and i am still having the same issue. let me
give you some more details and then ask a couple of questions.

when i try to open one of these Xvid files using any of my media
players, the result is that my machine sort of hangs - it doesn't
completely hang, but it becomes marginally responsive and it is a
challenge to even get into task manager. even if i exit the media
player, the process remains active in task manager and is usually
eating up a fair amount of memory. once i finally hobble my way to
terminating the process, the machine behaves normally from there.
this was true of WMP 11 AND of Media Player Classic. When I installed
the ffdshow, the same thing happened, although I do not know how to
determine if my machine is trying to use the ffdshow or if it is still
trying to use the Foepe codecs.

my questions:

1. how can i determine/set which codec is being used?

2. can you provide a little more detail on the settings in ffdshow
that will potentially be useful to me?

thanks for the help. i just rebuilt this system from the ground up,
after having serious OS problems, so this is a very clean install on a
freshly formatted hard drive - with all updates installed. i just
thought i'd mention that in case you were wondering if my system is
stable or not.

thanks again

also, some information about my system:

AMD Athlon 2700XP, 1.5 GB RAM, Nvidia 6600GT video card, M-Audio Delta
1010-LT audio, running Win XP PRO with SP2 and all updates, WMP 11 and
Media Player Classic installed.

Well, it's a workaround but not actually a solution. Could be that WMP 11
needs to be reinstalled. VideoLan player is another option that includes
built in support for a number of different video file/codec types besides
XviD.

XviD encoded videos should be able to play in WMP with either the XviD codec
or ffdshow installed. The problem pretty much has to be caused by something
that is already installed in your computer, be it a corrupt codec, software,
whatever.
