Difficulty Upgrading to XP Home Edition from ME

I am unable to complete a re-installation of my upgrade version of XP Home Edition. After installing a new hard drive to replace one that died, I installed ME without problems. However, when I attempt to install the upgrade, it stops at about the same point each time (usually with 52 minutes remaining during the "preparing to install"). Eventually, I get a blue screen each time that prompts me to clean my CD. After unsuccessfully attempting to clean the CD numerous times, I am wondering what options are available to me

Thank you for your help.

A upgrade version of XP will do a clean install. Boot from your XP CD,
follow the prompts. There is no need to install ME first, just have the ME
CD at hand so you can insert it into the CD drive when prompted to.

Suggestions.

Get a CD/DVD cleaning disc and use it to clean the lens of your drive. The
cleaning disc has brush on it to clean the lens. Widely available {even in
my local supermarket} for a few dollars.

Disconnect all external hardware such as printers and scanners.
Start over with the Windows XP CD. Use the Windows XP CD to reformat your
hard drive to get rid of Windows ME. If you prefer you could use your
Windows ME startup floppy to boot to DOS and reformat the drive,
You do not have to have Windows ME installed to upgrade to Windows XP. Just
have the Windows ME CD available to insert in your drive when asked for a
qualifying product.
