I formatted the drive and now want to do a fresh install of XP-Pro into a
computer that I built a few months ago. My cd says that it "includes service
pack 1a"
Along in the process, Install halts and tells me it 'the file asms on the
xp-pro sp1 cd is needed'. I am instructed to insert the sp1 cd and click
ok!!!! Prob is. the label says it's already there and I got no second
cd-when i bought this copy

I have long forgotten what I did to get this to install the first time. Can
anyone help me please. I hate to go out and just buy another copy of XP.

Thank you so much.

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation
are most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order
of likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On
much less frequent occasions, a bad CD or defective CD drive can also
cause this.

Was there a problem that led to your thinking a re-install of the
OS was necessary? If so, have you eliminated hardware as a potential
source of that problem?

You might try copying the \i386 folder from the CD to your hard
drive (after formatting it, of course) and then running
C:\i386\Winnt.exe from the command prompt.

Well Its an Asus P4C800E-Deluxe motherboard. RAM passes the standard ram
check on p.o.s.t. (not a rigorous test I must admit). As to the CD
drive....... well Maybe I shold worry. It's a Plextor cd\DVD drive and I'm a
little nervous about these do-everything drives.
I will probably pop for another copy of the OS, I can always use it. This
has never happened before to me so I agree it's rare. thankfully.
And, thank you Bruce.

You're welcome. FYI, the POST does "test" the RAM at all, it just
counts it. You might try MemTest:

hello Bruce ,
In general I agree to your idea to first exclude hardwareproblems .
I slipstreamed xp sp2 rc1 (german edition) to a XP home sp1 OEM and to a XP prof OEM sp1 . Afterwards I generated testinstallations . A lot of files from the slipstremed XP home couldn't be copied to the HD ( C:) , but the installation did run through . I tried then with the slipstreamed XP prof . And again some files couldn't be copied , not as much as with the XP home . Then I repeated the installationprocess with another computer with differrent hardware . The same failures occurred ! My conclusion : A beta-bug is responsible for the failure of copiing the files . Mister Hobbs , I think , has a problem with a somehow corrupt XP prof copy . Best wishes to you Bruce and to you Michael
