To the Group:

I am having a problem networking two Machines with
Windows XP Professional on my PC and XP Home Edition on
my Toshiba Laptop.

Both Machines are hooked up to ports on my SMC Router.
While the Laptop with Home edition appears to acknowledge
the presence of the C Drive of my PC, the PC does not
appear to recognize the presence of the Laptop at all.

When I attempt to connect to the PC with my Laptop via my
Network Places and ultimately via view Workgroup
Computers the system says the following:

Livingroom, which is my PC is not accessible. You might
not have permission to use this network resource. Contact
the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permission. The network path was not found.

On the PC I get the following message. The list of
servers for this workgroup is not currently available. I
am completely stumped by these messages. I am set up as
the system administrator and the only user of each of
these machines and all I want to do is file share between
the two machines.

Can anyone help me see my way through this problem. I
suspect something or several things are not set correctly
in one or both of these machines and that this is an easy
fix for someone other than myself. Help please!

Warmest regards,
Ted Schiff

IF you have a firewall running that might be preventing
the computers from seeing one another. I trusted the IP
address and now can get to my desktop files from my
laptop, but I get the same error message you do when
trying to get to laptop files from the PC. Hope this at
least eliminates part of your problem.

Good suggestion. Also check the built in XP firewall on
the network connections. If that's on, then it filters
out the requests for network access. If you reply on the
firewall for internet safety, then get zone alarm
instlled and set that up to allow connections from your
other machine. Disable the XP firewall. It's too basic.

WARNING : DO NOT RUN AN INTERNET CONNECTION WITHOUT A
FIREWALL IN PLACE, EVEN THE XP BUILT IN ONE PROVIDES SOME
PROTECTION. DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND DOWNLOAD ZONE
ALARM :)
